Sales Archetype
Devoted Cultivator
You've been in this account longer than most of the people in it.
The Devoted Cultivator outlasts everyone. The champion who signed the original deal left two years ago. The exec sponsor changed twice. You're still there, and at this point you're the institutional memory for a company you don't work at.
Most reps rotate. You didn't, and the compounding is real — you know what was tried in 2022 and why it failed, which nobody currently in the building does.
Strengths
You know the account's history, including the failures that shape what they'll consider now.
You survive leadership changes, because you were never dependent on one relationship.
New stakeholders inherit you as a fixture rather than evaluating you as a vendor.
You can predict what this account will say no to, which saves months on every expansion.
Blind Spots
You can know an account so well you stop asking what changed.
You can be the reason a bad fit renews for the fourth year.
You can hold onto the account after it's clear the growth is gone, because leaving feels wrong.
You can protect a relationship instead of a number, and mean it as a virtue.
In the Deal
In a live deal, the Devoted Cultivator tells a new VP why the thing they're about to propose failed here in 2022, and saves them a quarter. That's worth more than anything in the product, and it only exists because you stayed — which also means you've now spent four years in a territory where a rep who moved on would have opened three new accounts.
Who You Sell Best To
Large stable accounts with long horizons and high switching costs. Organizations that churn people but not vendors. You struggle where growth requires new logos rather than deeper penetration, and in fast markets where history stops being relevant.
Your Growth Edge
Every Devoted Cultivator has an account that stopped growing and never got dropped. The knowledge is real and it's also sunk — what you know about 2022 has no value anywhere else. The accounts that reward loyalty and the accounts that just receive it look identical from the inside.
The Tension
Devotion stays. Cultivating deepens. Both get better with time and neither has a stopping rule, so the account never reaches a point where you'd reconsider it. A rep who felt restless would leave some accounts too early and learn something from the ones that turned out fine without them. You never run that experiment.
Often Mistaken For
Devoted Connector Both stay for years and both go deep. Yours is about the account. The Connector's is about the people, including things that have nothing to do with the business. If you'd help a buyer with a problem that isn't yours, the Connector is closer.
